PLEASE BE ON STANDBY TO MAKE CALLS FOR BROTHER KHALFANI !!!! He can legally be held in solitary for up to 90 days ‘under investigation’ without any charges, but we don’t want to let that happen!
Brother Khalfani Malik Khaldun is a revolutionary New Afrikan political prisoner who has been incarcerated in Indiana prisons for over 30 years – 20 of those years in solitary confinement – and has been deeply involved in struggles in defense of prisoners rights and dignity throughout that time. In the 90s, during the height of the Indiana prison movement, Bro. Khalfani led political education study groups and participated in mass hunger strikes and other forms of prison rebellion.
In 1995, when he had just months left on his prison sentence, Bro. Khalfani was falsely accused and wrongfully convicted of murdering a guard, who the state claimed had been killed in response to a New Afrikan political prisoner, Ajamu Nassor-Resnover, being executed by the State of Indiana. Khalfani was railroaded in kangaroo court proceedings, throughout which he was forced to wear a stun belt (like a stun gun but wrapped around your waist and operated by remote control), a practice which has since been found to be unconstitutional as it prevents the wearer from being able to defend themself adequately through intimidation. After being wrongfully convicted of the guard’s murder, Bro. Khalfani was held in solitary in the Secure Housing Unit (SHU) at Wabash Valley CF, the most repressive unit in Indiana, where he was constantly tormented by staff for 20 years.
Bro. Khalfani was released from the SHU in the last few years, likely due to Aaron Isby-Israel’s legal challenge to the practice of indefinite solitary confinement, but the prison administration at Wabash Valley has prevented him from accessing programs that would put him in a position to transfer out of that facility and receive time-cuts if he completed them. In 2019. Bro. Khalfani filed a lawsuit against several IDOC and WVCF officlals, detailing a pattern of retaliation against him since his release from the SHU. Immediately after he filed his lawsuit, guards ransacked and trashed Khalfani’s cell. Recently, Bro. Khalfani received damning and scandalous discovery documents in his case, and shortly thereafter – last week – he was put under investigation by Internal Affairs and thrown back in the SHU! Bro. Khalfani suffers from severe depression and other psychological problems as a result of being held in solitary and harassed for 20 years straight, and his mental health code prohibits him from being held on solitary any more!
Listen to the interview below for Khalfani’s own description of the SHU and the repression he is currently experiencing.
