On March 19th, prisoners housed in M-Housing Unit were released from their cell for dinner around 4:25 p.m. The Aramark staff served as the main course rotini in meat sauce. Sometime around 4:35, two prisoners enter the dining hall and picked up their trays later to discover large black pebbles of rat droppings in their food.
These two prisoners immediately went to report this to the person in charge of serving, Aramark staff Ms. Wallace. She tried to shrug it off as being pieces of burnt meat. Ms. Wallace advised these men to just grab two more trays. She said she’d write up an incident report on the matter. Then she kept serving the meal to other prisoners as if nothing happened.
The Aramark staff and custody were supposed to shut down the entire kitchen, stop serving that meal, and serve sack lunches until the meal being served was thrown out. Aramark supervisors continued to serve the dinner meal like nothing ever happened.
There are several prisoner witnesses who saw these rat droppings, and they can be interviewed for confirmation. The two prisoners whose food had the dropping have filed Informal Grievances on the incident. The Head Supervisor for Aramark, Daniel Sedwell, downplays this incident in his response. Claiming it was not rat dropping. Trying to prevent being held liable for his extremely unsanitary conditions.
The following day after this incident, Aramark staff called in a[n] exterminator to spray areas in the Dining Food Building and the Main Production Kitchen. They also watched video footage for when the kitchens were empty. Seeing huge rats running around at night exposed to everything. We want you to help us get the word out to officials in Indianapolis and the Governor’s office. We can’t let this incident get swept under the rug.
