Phone Zap: Inmates Beaten by Guards at Pendleton CF in Retaliation for Asserting Rights

We learned recently that on 10/10, Quintero Hayes #213543, incarcerated at Pendleton CF in long-term segregation (G House), was jumped by guards for requesting medical “too much .” Hayes was supposed to see mental health but when inmates were brought in from rec the guards refused to take him. Hayes asked to be taken to mental health, and in response the guards took him out and beat him. First, the guards took him out on the tier and started beating him in full view of surveillance cameras. Then, realizing their mistake, they took him by the shower where there are no cameras. The guards slammed Hayes’ head into a metal door. He’s got a big welt now. Then the guards put handcuffs on Hayes’ ankles and wrists so tight that he lost feeling for a long time.

Then, on Thursday 10/17, Corey Smith #197539 refused to be interviewed by IA. Later that day guards in full riot gear took Smith out of G-House. He was forced to spend the night on strip cell. When he was brought back to his cell, guards had confiscated all of his property – including his clothes and and blankets. The temperature in his cell hovers between 30 and 40 degrees, and Mr. Smith is stuck in there freezing.

Please call Pendleton CF Warden Dushan Zatecky and demand that the guards who committed this assault be held responsible, and that inmates be given unfettered access to health services without retaliation!

Staff assaulted and beat Mr. Hayes in retaliation for requesting medical attention, and Mr. Smith in retaliation for asserting his right to remain silent.
